Ketchikan was our last Alaskan port on our cruise aboard the Westerdam. We were worried that it might be raining but it was a sunny warm (74°) day. Our plan was to walk over to Creek Street and explore a bit after that. Once off the ship my wife, CJ, and I stopped at the Information center for a map and learned of the free shuttle bus. We headed to the bus stop but the regular bus showed up and the driver said the fare was $0.50 each. So we took a 35 minute ride through some of the residential area. It was good to see that Ketchikan is a regular town in addition to a tourist destination. We got off at the entrance to Creek Street, a definite tourist attraction. There were lots of shops on the other side of the wooden bridge that crossed the creek.

Totem poles are very significant in Alaska culture and there was a nice example in Ketchikan.

A clerk in a shop recommended the Cape Fox Lodge for breakfast and we thought that would be good. So we paid $2.00 each to ride the funicular up the hill to the lodge. An omelet and sourdough pancakes were our breakfast choices. Both were excellent as the was view of downtown through the floor to ceiling windows. Afterwards we went through the lobby to a small lawn area with 6 totem poles in an oval configuration. They were good examples of the artistry of totem carvers.

A phone call from our friend Carol Leigh let us know that a bald eagle awaited our return down the mountain. As we exited Creek Street two men had birds that you could pose with - a barn owl and a bald eagle. We took plenty of pictures before posing with the eagle. Another passenger on the ship used our camera to take our picture after we had done the same for them. The walk back to the ship was easy but we stopped for salmon and fudge and to check out a couple of gift shops. We loved our time in Ketchikan.

Drat! I missed the totem pole area you found. Sigh. Gonna have to go back, I guess... Good photo article, Rich.
